Ingwe — The Glass House A glass house for two, deep in the Karkloof forest. Ingwe sits quietly amongst the trees, surrounded almost entirely by glass. From inside, there is little separation between you and the forest — trees in every direction, birds moving through the canopy and the sound of the river below. The open-plan interior is centered around a large king-size bed, with a freestanding bath tucked just behind it and views out into the forest beyond. There is a fireplace for cold Karkloof evenings and a modern, fully equipped kitchen if you feel like cooking. A separate bathroom has a walk-in shower and toilet. Outside, a wooden deck disappears into the trees. Spend the afternoon on the daybed, light the wood-fired hot tub as the temperature drops, or eat outside while the forest settles around you. Below the deck, a fire pit offers another place to sit beneath the canopy after dark. If you’d rather not cook, our private chef can prepare dinner for you at Ingwe by prior arrangement. Picnics beside the dam can also be arranged. There is no itinerary here. Walk, explore, eat, read, light a fire, soak in the hot tub — or do very little at all. Ingwe is currently fully self-catering, and guests self-drive to the house. The kitchen is fully equipped, so we recommend stocking up in Howick before making your way into the forest. Self-guided walks are available on the property, giving you the freedom to explore the forest and surrounding landscape in your own time. Ingwe is deliberately disconnected. There is no Wi-Fi and little to no cellphone signal at the house — part of the pleasure of staying here is having a genuine opportunity to switch off. Wi-Fi is available at the main lodge and restaurant area should you need to reconnect during your stay.
